I always suspected him too, but he ended up becoming one of the gateways to all the good things i learned and use to this day. It sounds a lot like something related to a cult, and a handsome blond guy who claims to be part of a galactic fleet that protects you sounds too... "plastic" to be true, I suppose. We all have been here before, it happens.
In my opinion, he always seemed like just another soul doing his job. Don't focus so much on him, just the message. If the message works, great. If not, next one. But if you STILL end up obssessed with the handsome tall alien dude that came from heavens and the beyond to save you... then i guess thats also good.
