I complimented a few women at a convention(since I was in a new city talking to people I knew I would never see again, so this was one of my "break my social anxiety" goals), and the responses went differently depending on who had a boyfriend or didn't. I wasn't even hitting on them, I just liked the fashion style they went with/the character they were dressed as. The one who did have a boyfriend who I saw her with at a different point walking around was much more receptive and willing to talk about it with me and could tell I wasn't trying to be weird about it, while the presumably single girls I said the exact same things to looked at me as if I ruined their whole day and it made me sad.

One of the biggest pieces of advice I remembered being told to make friends was going to places for your hobbies since you'll meet people of similar interests, but even that idea's been shattered for me... Almost every time I've tried, I've only felt rejected and repulsive. It's not like I go around hitting on everyone and being a creep or weirdo, I literally just try to start a conversation about the thing we both like and right from the get go, it just feels like they don't want me around.
