This is boomer fudlore. The only negative impact ethanol has on old cars is more frequent carb gumming. You won't hurt an old engine on ethanol. The extra valvetrain wear comes from the reduced lubricity of not having lead in the gas, and even that is extremely overblown. I always put hardend valve guides and seats in old rebuilds if they need it, but more often than not, valves and guides are completely fine despite being run on unleaded gas with no additives for the last 30 years.
