The problem is awareness, but not of the lack of achievement, but the myriad of things you are capable of: being a musician, a writer, an engineer, a father, a craftsmen, a game developer, and so on. You must choose one of these things, to the exclusion of all the others, do a lot of shit work to get good, and this terrifies the 'gifted child', the loss of potential and doing the dirty work.
Commitment isn't about how hard you work, it's about being able to let everything else go.
