I modeled in the powley computer what a 30 carbine case based 5.56 (at 80kpsi) would look like, and it almost duplicates 5.56 performance with a much shorter and smaller case. With high BC VLDs, it can surpass 5.56 at ~100 yards in energy. A brass 30 carbine case weighs about 65gr, 2/3 of that is 42gr. So if you were starting from scratch and endeavored to recreate 5.56 using NAS3 cases, you could lighten the case by 3 grams (assuming 80k works with NAS3) vs brass-cased 5.56. 1.4lbs over a combat load. Poof, gone.

All this to say, NAS3 could be the beginning of a paradigm shift in military ammunition.

I say I did the above like I just casually did it but I’ve been obsessing over this idea for a bit, of what 80kpsi cases make possible. Here’s a mock-up I made using hornady’s cartridge images from their website. Left: 5.56-analog (sort of), right: 5.56. VLDs are another great thing to couple with high pressure. Maximize efficiency in all areas to minimize the size and weight of the case.
