Well Russia doesn't have much of a choice but to carry on and pursue TZD since the Ukrainians believe their available peace terms are 1991 borders and reparations. Ukraine feels they are negotiating from a stronger position than Russia.
Putin can't withdraw from the four post 2022 regions he annexed and abandon the Russian-speakers who >95% voted to join Russia.
And he certainly can't lose Crimea, which is the pinnacle of his presidency or Crown Jewel of his reign.
Any ceasefire would allow Ukraine to rearm more as well as perform troop rotations. And invite allied troops into Ukraine as peacekeepers.
If Zelensky had buckled from his position, even with this year's Trump's pressure to give up Crimea at the very least, then Putin could set about negotiating a peace deal. But Zelensky has remained firm, as he should, so TZD has to carry on until Putin thinks he can break Zelensky's resolve militarily.
How do you play this if you're Putin? You can't actually seek a peace treaty because you can't enforce even your most minimal demands. And you certainly can't walk away to 1991 borders, not with your sunken costs. And some of them are literally sunk like the Moskva. It's TZD or bust I'm afraid.
