I would say he made the image of Superman younger. Wayne Boring and Curt Swan, who did the two most definitive Superman art of the time, seemed to make Superman more in his late 30's/40s.
Reeve was explicitly meant to be around 30 in the movie, having been tought by the Jor-El hologram for 12 years after he was 18.
