It's a fight or flight thing based on trauma. You get bullied and shit on enough as a kid and you'll get this sense that you shouldn't fight, because you won't win.
I'm still not completely over it, and at 31 I doubt there's a lot of ways to get over it completely, but what I've found is that avoiding conflict is not necessarily a bad thing. What you do is build yourself into a position where the idea of trying to walk over you is daunting and unseemly in itself. "That's the only guy who gets me the thing I want. Do I really want to make him mad?"
The answer is often enough "no," if you're a developed and competent professional.
