To expand on this, I think the raid on Shiranui's shrine and Mao and Nanoka's date afterwards would be the perfect breakpoint for the first season, because

>A mystery that was introduced near the start of the series gets resolved
>There's a bunch of new hooks to focus on in the next season
>You get to end on a lighter note with some romantic development between Mao and Nanoka
>The new Kou clan characters like Kagari and Souma start getting introduced right after that, which would be better left for the start of the next season
With two cours, it would mean using roughly 3.5 episodes per volume, which I think would be a fairly comfortable pace.
