I personally find it easier as long as I understand the character I'm supposed to be rather than the things I'm supposed to say or do, because those will come somewhat naturally

My best advice for trying to learn would probably be: Just do it.
When you play a character, forget that the situations is "I am X playing Y", change your brain to be "I am Y"
