Did they seriously shoot down F-35s? I'm talking about how they killed the head of the Israeli Navy. The reason you're seeing our media play up that Israel successfully killed Iranian energy and science officials is that they aren't having much luck with hard targets like military installations and they need to prey on civilians. It's very similar to how the Ukraine frequently bombs random gas stations in hopes they can pass it off as a victory against a key petroleum facility.

The reason we know they're close to making a nuke is that Carter literally sent the Shah the instructions and a "nuclear kit" in the 70s before backing the Islamic Republic movement overthrowing their government. Precisely as you stated, they haven't done anything to develop a nuke since the 80s. They're just somewhat close to manufacturing a warhead and they prefer to keep things in that position. Japan has the nuclear kit too. There are plenty of countries that are nuclear-capable and they haven't gotten nukes just because they don't want to spend money maintaining a nuclear arsenal when they can just rely on a foreign country. It's pretty much a psychological tool to keep countries feeling like they're consenting to not having a nuke and remaining under our wing. The Japanese even feel great national pride about the fact they haven't used their nuclear kit to make those weapons we used against them in WWII.
