Under right leadership, Brazil could have been something akin to the US of South America.
You guys had the same problem we did that the US was born from similar but distinct colonies in the aftermath of Europe's colonial period that were open to the idea of a greater union but wanted to keep autonomy. We united our 13 colonies under republicanism and Brazil tried to unite the Portuguese-speaking colonies with an empire. The Americas could have been two imperial republics (USA + Brazil) with a bunch of smaller spanish-speaking republics between us.
