Maybe self awareness isn't the right phrase, I guess self-conscious is probably more what I meant.
Of course kids have always had a level of shyness and fear of being too different, but it currently feels so much stronger.
I always think back to videos of people in the 90s and even early 00s going to video game midnight releases or like the Phantom Menace opening session and they're all so genuine and excited to show emotion. The recent 'chicken jockey' thing from the Minecraft movie is maybe people trying to move back to that a bit, but it's hard not to also see it with a tinge of ironic "lets pretend something is really good and funny even though we all know its bad"
