Poland has just made its largest-ever conventional oil and gas discovery and it happened just a few kilometres off its northern coast in the Baltic Sea.
The announcement came this week from Canadian energy firm Central European Petroleum, who confirmed that the newly identified Wolin East field, located just six kilometres from the busy port city of Świnoujście, holds around 22 million tonnes of recoverable oil and 5 billion cubic meters of commercial-grade natural gas.
A game changer for Poland
To put that into perspective: this single field could contain energy equivalent to over 300 million barrels of oil. For Poland, a country that currently imports 97% of its crude oil, that’s no small drop in the barrel. It’s potentially a strategic turning point.
