Now I think "to pass / passer" is ambiguous. Usually in French we "pass an exam" in a neutral way, and rarely we "passed the exam" to say we succeeded but it's a bit old-fashioned and literary, we would rather say straight up we "succeeded the exam" literally in English
Yes it's deceptive. The problem is translating both languages with literary sources when they're both very organic. France has the 'Académie française' which officially regulates the language and it's comprised of very old-fashioned extremely conservative litterature professionals.
