I think it varies from person to person. If I find myself looking at the figure over and over again, I take that as a sign I really want the figure. Most figures I go 'that's cool' and move on. The ones I go 'I like that, I want it, and I want to look at it again and again', then I usually want to pursue buying it.
Sometimes figures are really nice looking, but the pricing is way too high- so I skip or wait for a sale.
Sometimes the figure looks nice, but the pose annoys me- so I skip on them and hope they get a different figure later. Pic related for example I like, but the balance and pose make me worried. If she was standing with both legs and looked more balanced, I may go for it.
