Ukraine recently imposed personal sanctions on 15 heads of Russian museums.

Why is this important?

These museum officials are accomplices in serious crimes:

◾ they have actively spread Russian propaganda - in Russia, in the occupied territories, and abroad;
◾ they were directly involved in the looting of Ukrainian museums and cultural sites.

Russia has officially - through the adoption of legislation - stolen all Ukrainian museums and monuments located both in the occupied territories and in those areas that the Russian government has illegally incorporated into its constitution.

We're talking about approximately 1.7 million items.

It all started after the occupation of Crimea in 2014 and has only intensified since, as there was no meaningful resistance.

Russia is formally re-registering Ukrainian property as its own, entering Ukrainian cultural assets into the Russian national catalog.
Officials from Russian museums are directly involved in this process - visiting occupied territories in person and "mentoring" either on-site or online.

Their impunity is about to end.
A separate clause of the decision instructs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to inform international partners about the sanctions and encourage them to adopt similar restrictive measures.
