Stuff like Lain and Utena (zero offense to Lain) is a lot more paraded as patrician core by pseuds than Tatami Galaxy is, a series that is really just appreciated as a seinen gem by those who've seen it and rarely talked about at all. So Tatami Galaxy is highbrow and avant-garde; so what? I enjoyed it a great deal and used to even 3x3 it.
