That said some 2 hours later I figured it out.
The mod Loft Bed was responsible for completely breaking the job driver for eating, for both humanoids and wild animals.
It's not technically 1.6 compatible but I thought it might be safe since it's a simple furniture mod, but I guess some witchcraft that breaks the game in such a completely unrelated way is at play.
