i think the ending is actually pretty good. like many of ito's longer works it has a slight dash of hope. there are immune people trying to find a possible cure, yeah, but the ending is for kaori. her plight is over, she's free from the smell and tadashi got his own closure.
realistically it's hopeless, but the story makes sense to end here, his arc is over and i don't know how interesting it would actually be to watch a bunch of nerds "fight" the infection
