Garnets typically have a dodecahedral crystal structure, so an "ideal" garnet will naturally occur like that. Though of course most garnets won't form perfectly, and ones found in the rough aren't exactly going to have smoothly polished faces and sharp edges. It's exaggerated for effect, just like finding a huge cliff face geode out and about.
