modern artists are so concerned with their self proclaimed identities as "artists" they forget to actually create anything of value and have been tricked into thinking oligarchs money laundering with their work means they're genuinely as talented as michaelangelo or corradini.
for some reason it's only modern art where this level of navelgazing fart sniffing takes place. not even the schlockiest and most pretentious film students and wannabe arthouse critics genuinely argue that modern low effort slop is actually comparable to Lawrence of Arabia or whatever. Nobody is pretending their irony-poisoned twilight fanfiction is better than The Once and Future King in books. But there really are pretentious painters and """"modern art""""" enthusiasts who think absolute low effort slop is just as worthy of praise as genuine high art; and the really pretentious ones will say it's actually MORE worthy of praise since the old stuff was made by white guys or colonizers and not a gay black jewish transwoman and you shouldn't "gatekeep" art with something as mundane as talent...........

actually I take it back, there is ONE field as sniveling and fart sniffing as modern art, it's modern poetry.
