Yeah, the ad is supposed to make mid girls think “oh shit, I look more like lame chubby Shirley then popular slim Sally, I’d better not let myself get fat (so I should go out and buy LifeSavers(tm) today).” But they also had ads like picrel coexisting at the same time. It’s not like people had no concept of women being too fat, far from it, but there was universally considered to be a “sweet spot” rather than skinnier = better. The ultra skinny look that was so popular as “peak hot” in the late 90s-early 10s is a historical aberration. And again it’s not like there aren’t or weren’t guys who sincerely prefer super thin girls, obviously it’s a type, but there are guys who prefer thick (read: overweight) girls too.
