Both my uncles were Viet Nam vets. They used to get wasted when I was a kid and talk about what they saw, not so much what they did. The elder uncle we’ll call Mark, spoke of walking over a hill only to see the bodies of his friends whom he couldn’t save. Clearly these memories tormented him, because he struggled with weight issues and depression. He ended up on the receiving end of over six heart surgery’s to bypass his heart. In the end he stood up during dinner one night and said “something is wrong.” Collapsed on the floor to the horror of everyone in the room.

The second we’ll call Danny. Seemed more to repress the memories altogether and act like it didn’t happen. He went on to make plenty of money and vacation with his wife for 20 years. He finally realized he had failed to sire sons, so he had two late in life. By the time his sons were in high school Danny was 70 but still very active and healthy. He still lives today.
So I guess what I’m trying to say based on my family story is some men are made different, and some aren’t. At the same time, surviving in this reality for a long time isn’t always a good thing, but I believe it’s clear regardless some are simply able to handle high stress better than others. The factors are immense. Most of us here /pol/ are not afraid, but you have to remember everyone else IS very afraid.
