Cosmic horror is incomprehensible to humans by definition.
You try to comprehend it, you go mad.
You try to counteract it, you get outplayed.
You level the playing field by forsaking yourself and delving into unspeakable, and you only delay the inevitable a bit.
This is why Derleth's "continuations" of Nigger-Man's owner works suck so much.
Derleth wasn't a hack, but when you nuke a fucking Cthulhu, it's not a cosmic horror, it's "humanity fuck yeah".
A videogame is different from a book or a movie because it gives you agency.
To counteract this and retain the horror level, you've got to raise the stakes.
Then you can't raise the stakes anymore and your choices are "humanity fuck yeah" (say, Mass Effect 3) or "rocks fall, everybody dies" (say, Dead Space 3).
You can "live" with cosmic horror side by side not interacting with it that much, but these are usually weird and quirky games made by fags for fags.
