And he was perfectly content to just chill in his nothingness, and then existence happened and fucked everything up. The Celestials found him while they were seeding everything in the First Universe and figured he'd make a good "warden" as it were for the fledgling multiverse they were making. Be the guy who keeps the gears oiled. Knull had some objections, made the first bladed weapon in existence and waged war on them (that decapitated Celestial head the Guardians use as thier home base? Pic related is how that came to pass). The symbiote were made by him as more of an afterthought, he just needed an army for reasons and made them from the void itself. Then he made the mistake of sending them to conquer planets and they started picking up bad habits from thier living hosts (read: they shared the feelings of thier hosts and realized "Hey....our god is a DICK"), so they rebelled against him and eventually built a planet sized prison to hold him in (which today is called Klyntar)
