>“Goddess, not you too.” You groan, sagging down in your seat. Fine, fuck it. If even your cousin was going to give in to this madness, at least you’d try to hear it out with more consideration. “Explain what you mean. And start from the beginning!”

Bronte sighs, not immediately delving into an explanation. Rather, she seems to take a few moments to compose her thoughts, and you get the feeling that you’re the first person she’s ever had to relay this information to.

“Very well. I know exactly how insane this is going to sound, but please, promise to listen to me with an open mind.” Bronte pleads. “It all began…thousands of years ago.”

>“Of course it did.”

“Shut up! Let me finish!” She seethes, nails out, ready to lash at you. “For the record, a LOT of this is going to go against church doctrine. If they knew what I was about to tell you, they’d probably brand me a heretic. Save your interruptions and questions for the end, please.”

>“Fine.”

Bronte clears her throat. “Right. As you’re well aware, the Church teaches that humans were created by the Goddess, and that they spread out across the land and multiplied. However, in truth, we were not the first ones here. We were preceded by two ancient civilizations. The Agarthans were first. They were both a sorcerous and technological people, whose advancements in both fields dwarf that of what we know today. They worshipped not the Goddess, but a pantheon of their own deities, and they lived in vast cities made of steel that would put what you see here in Morfis to shame.”

Noticing a plate of untouched rice crackers on the table before you, you help yourself to a treat. You munch down as Bronte continues.

“The Agarthans had no knowledge of the Goddess until she appeared to them one day with her own spawn in tow. Those were the Nabateans. Humanoids with the ability to morph into a myriad of beasts, most chiefly among them, dragons. The Agarthans and Nabateans were able to coexist in peace for some time, but in truth, the Agarthans always had their suspicions of the Goddess. They already had their own gods they worshipped, and they viewed her as a foreign entity that did not make sense to them. An alien being with the power to create new life. A threat. Eventually, relations broke down, and the two races fought a war that threatened to destroy the entire world. The Nabateans won that war after the Goddess wiped the table clean with her power, and the few surviving Agarthans were exiled to the underground of Fodlan, condemned to suffer to the darkness, as well as to their growing madness and desires for vengeance. Eventually, even their very forms would twist, resembling nothing of humanity.”

Shit, the rice cracker had made your throat parched. You spot a tea kettle off to the side. Grabbing it, you are disappointed to find it empty.
