“Fat lot of good it will do us having a chat with a Titan’s AI, assuming there is one, while the damn Imps piloting it are vaporising us from several clicks away. Plugging him in would mean…” You take another look at the mud map representing the perimeter Main Base Alpha, and after thing about it for a few seconds you throw your head back and laugh. “HahahAH! I’m flattered that you think I’m that good, Hail, but even I can’t voidwalk my way through a killzone littered with minefields, scanners, hunter-killers and bunkers packed with Savis legionnaires. I couldn’t try that on my own, much less robot in tow.”
“You’re right about that, ‘Mama Snake’. You’re good, but you’re not -that- good.” You frown at Hail’s comment.
But Crane has had to teach you what reverse psychology is and how to stop falling for it right away everytime. You won’t be killed trying to sneak in to prove a point.
“But you wouldn’t need to be going in alone. And you definitely wouldn’t need to be going in through the front. What we’d need is a ride. It would need to be airborne, from one of the outlying forward bases and preferably scheduled for the trip back to Main Base already.” You lean over Hails shoulder, following his gesture to the farmost eastern part of the map. The one surround by -a lot- of the 280th pin markins. “The secondary landing zones are here, by the primary barracks. From this point, all the way through to the Intercept Tower and Titan Bays there, that’s all garrisoned by the greenest young Legionaries on this side of the ‘verse. Most of them are still learning how to hold a weapon, nevermind identification protocols or maintaining internal base security.”
You look over your shoulder at the figures milling about in the bunker outside. “Even with that on our side, my people and your little merry of rebels are little… diverse, to pass ourselves of as auxiliaries. And they stopped bothering with prisoners months back.”
“I agree, going on foot is a dead start. But there are cargo haulers in the hanger bays, most of the strike team would be squared away in the back of one or two of those. The Indomitus and the August are currently stationed here,” Hail taps his finger on two wide rectangular buildings located almost dead centre in Imperial base. “My source tells me they’ve been recalled to Main Base Alpha to re-arm and recharge ahead of the next push in clearing the jungle foliage, after which our own doorstep here will be well and truly on fire.”
“And to get to there you need to bluff your way past voidmother knows how many checkpoints. Even green recruits can tell the difference between a Savis and a Boscht.”
“The Red Hand doesn’t have many Savis in our ranks, none that I trust, so the driving crew would need to pass themselves off as Cradler Auxiliaries.”
“Hence the need for me.”
