You could argue that Arthas had done a lot of evil shit past Stratholme anyway, but I think it was the mix of abandonment, frustration and feeling like he was past the point of no return. If he purged an entire town full of people, what's a few more soldiers? He allowed vengeance to get in the way of his true goals, ignoring Uther's advice, and got drunk with power. I don't think he would've become such a dick if things turned out a little differently though, so I'm not sure why people apparently think he always was one.
