Not quite. Right before they were going to do something big, Spamton got a call, and whatever he heard made him freak out and flee.

Best guess is Phone told him about NEO. He tried to sneak in and steal it, but got caught.; And it let to Queen dunking him in acid, which shrunk him. The strings are a part of NEO.exe and not innate to Spamton normally. He doesn't even know the strings are there until part way through the boss fight.

If you specifically target the strings and not him, once you get him down to just one string he realizes you were trying to help him, and encourages you to cut the last one and set him free. Only for him to collapse to the ground unable to use NEO with no strings attatched (pun possibly intended)
I think a contamination of sorts began when he received the first phone call, and the final phone call broke his mind, possibly even some kind of 'transmission of divine knowledge darkkind was not meant to know' kind of thing
