A Russian airstrike using guided aerial bombs hit the central bus station in Zaporizhzhia on Sunday, injuring at least 20 people as rescuers raced to pull victims from the rubble, Ukrainian officials said.
The attack occurred around 5:50 PM local time, causing extensive damage to the bus station and a nearby clinic affiliated with Zaporizhzhia's medical university. One person was pulled from under the collapsed structures by emergency crews, and officials initially stated one of the injured was in serious condition. The victims suffered multiple shrapnel and blast-related injuries.
In addition to the main targets, the blast wave and debris damaged seven nearby apartment buildings, blowing out windows and damaging roofs. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack on civilian infrastructure, stating, "Airstrikes on the city, on ordinary buildings, on a bus station, on a clinic."
Emergency services completed rescue operations by 10 PM, with municipal services beginning recovery work. The attack has been classified as a war crime by local prosecutors, who have launched an investigation.
