In reality during the 90s fighting games were a KIDS THING. That's what they don't want you to *really* figure out. That this whole hobby is just a extension of a kid's franchise. Just how young the people competing in the Japanese national tournaments were. If you can find photos from that era in Japan of tournament crowds it looks like the average attendee age is about 16, with many well below that number.
