In which direction? I'd think it's not hardship but the other way around. But it's actually neither. Men throughout history liked thick women. Whether they were poor farmers who needed 7 kids to survive or affluent city dwellers who didn't need any kids. The trend to like skinny women just came and went at certain times. And that's the one that is linked to a specific economic/social situation (excess).
