It's called 'telegony' and it finally explained the existence of "ghost genes" in offspring that weren't from either parent.
It first was baffling, some made theories of it being from some long lost ancestor but that's not how DNA works.
Ultimately they found that it was from another male, not the father, and that it was from a previous relationship
The exact mechanism how this happens isn't exactly known.
