Hell, recently Ninty tried to patent the idea of playable character TURNING HIS HEAD to LOOK AT interesting stuff in a game! Shit we've had since like PS1 Resident Evil games.
It's also absurd to claim that Japs would not pirate.
Not to mention majority of JP games and anime would be never-ever heard outside their borders would it not be for emulation and fan-subs.
