I actually wholly agree, the slavery there was a symptom not a root cause. It could easily have been a different prestigious institution or nobility had the janissaries not been a thing.
That said there's definitely a correlation between institutions of slavery and resisting important developments / getting left behind, slaveholders and benefiting slaves both tend towards reactionary positions.
