I understand what you mean. But in 3D environment how else would Sonic reliably attack enemies?
The 2D games only have 2 dimensions to work with so not having any sort of lock-on attack was fine. Adding a 3rd dimension and trying to "jump" on an enemy without any assistance would not only increase the likelihood of an attack whiffing, but worse, the player becoming disoriented and frustrated. An exception would be >>531866786 or at least very few enemies.
Which would be disappointing since attacking enemies is a staple in Sonic games by "jumping" on them. A homing attack also assists in reorienting a player if Sonic becomes out of control due to his speed. Ironic considering that's his "thing".
