That's why they do their best to minimize friction between their story and the player, which means dumbing down the script to a toddler's level in most cases.

That doesn't happen with chinese games, since their devs know chinese people are high IQ individuals, which translates into a story that goes toe to toe with modern literature and can be easily put along great authors like Shakespeare and Nietzsche.
