Unrelated completely to the M96/7 issues. The 996/997 GT3s are very good btw in terms of reliability and lubrication.
The 4.2 R8 is the original R8 with an excellent Audi engine and lighter weight and the preference of Audi Sport when designing the car. Every R8 shares almost every component with the R8 GT3 LMS regardless of the 4.2 and 5.2 with the differences being in the cabin and efficacy features vs the race car having a cage and fire extinguisher and safety oriented interior. Engines and suspension are very close.
The 911 by comparison started to split dramatically in the 00s. The GT3 and Turbo had totally different engines than the C2s and different bodies than the C2s and of course had the LSD and other features you’d expect on a sports car. The GT3 cup for the 996 was basically a GT3 with some upgrades to the engine aimed at reliability and the interior. The 997 GT3 was further away from the GT3 street and the 991 basically is barely connected to the street car. Now we have basically zero connection at all to Carrera model from a GT3 cup which really is different than a GT3.
Thus NARP. Weissach makes the GT3s. They’re developed seperate from the C2 and have all the sports car parts on them.
Similarly Audi Sport makes the RS/R8 and the race cars. M gmbh makes the M cars and the race cars.
An S5 is not an RS5. It has only a door and roof in common with an RS5. Similarly a C2 is not a GT3. They’re both ‘911s’ but an S5 and an RS5 are both A5s. But not really.
Hence why a McDonald strut base model Carrera is NARP and a GT3 is not but a 4.2 R8 is legit just like a 5.2.
