”He’s on the run!” Phascomon calls.
Fear gives way to relief, as you watch DarkTyrannomon charge through the remnants of the first floor and past the giant globe that forms the exit. You don’t dare to give chase and finish him off. The strength difference is still present, you’ve just outmaneuvered him once again. Pursuing a fleeing beast will bring about a whole new layer of risk.
Commandramon’s mech moves towards yours. Your head is still spinning from the intensity of the fight, so you don’t process that it’s over until he opens the cockpit and waves his arms around to get your attention.
“Huh? Sorry, what did you say?”
”I said… I’m going after him. Mekanorimon and I are going deeper into the subnet. That’s our job. Don’t try and follow, I’m certain humans can’t survive in there.”
You open the cockpit and zoom in with your goggles. You can see the black silhouette of your foe moving further into the distance, beyond where the map ends. The ground gives way to floating chunks of greenish-blue light, forming some kind of artifact-riddled highway that leads off into the greater network that runs as the undercurrent of 87-O. Digimon can traverse these, but they’re likely even more hostile than service partitions.
“You sure? All by yourself? We could only repel him with all three of us, why do you think-“
”Get a clue already!” A voice cries in frustration. You look around in confusion, and spy Phascomon emerging from the dust and dirt to reunite with you.
”I’m sniffing what you’re scratching, buddy. Go on ahead.” He says.
With a solemn nod, Commandramon turns away from the two of you and clears his throat.
”Ahem… as per my mission directives to get to the bottom of the attack on the district, I will now be making an effort to pursue the culprit—DarkTyrannomon. As a person of interest in this case, I will require your full cooperation. You are to stay outside the partition and await further instructions, while I go off and follow the trail. Understood?”
You nod.
“And I suppose you’ll want to write a report on all of this after.”
”Yes. I’ll be legally required to. Now, go outside and wait.”
He gives you one last furtive look as he slams the cockpit shut and marches off, taking his injured partner further into the system. You know there’s nothing he can do to stop you from leaving while unsupervised. And so does he.
