>---: Consistent with your previous logic you cut the twice discarded Ton instead of trying to sakigiri 3p. But how about now?
>Owata: As you would expect this is finally the 3p cut. Before we could only accept 8s, 1s, and Hatsu to reach tenpai, but with the 2s we get additional acceptance of 3s and 6s.
>---: Kamicha shifts the draws with his pon and you draw into the 1s triplet for tenpai.
>Owata: When you reach tenpai while others have opened, there is great temptation to riichi. Maybe because you want to slow the open hands down, or maybe because you feel like it's fate. In sanma however, I strongly feel that dama much better. I already mentioned at the start of the book that winning with tsumo is worse, and that as dealer you want your mangan to be won with ron.
>---: Toimen's riichi declaration 3s deals into you.
>Owata: After hitting tenpai with a 9s discard I tsumogiri'd 0p and 7s, so I think he was aware that I might be dama. I wonder if he would still have dealt in if I had declared riichi.
>---: It's also possible that he would have pushed 3s anyway, right?
>Owata: That's correct, but then if I had riichi'd I might also have gotten ura for haneman, which on tsumo would lose 6000 points. There's no end to the what-ifs if we go there. Not winning a hand that could win can be fatal, but just losing a few points is not that bad. To leave a good record in the world known as tenhou, one single firework rocket is not enough. You have to build it bit by bit.
Skipped some images here, but none that would make for good WWYDs.
