To have the full picture, you have to also understand that 4chan is inherently contrarian and very hostile to the outside groups. It's usually a very good thing, but it has comes with some quirks—quirks such as overreacting to perceived signs of newfaggotry.
When redditor newfags came in and started vomiting spaces everywhere, anons became reluctant to ever press the enter key, and Celestia forbid press it more than once. By not pressing enter unless absolutely necessary, you were sort of affirming your allegiance to The True 4chan Users vs. the newfag redditors. It's actually a lot better now than it was 5-8 years ago, when any random line break could be taken as a sign of fraternizing with The Enemy.

And if you look through the archives at the pre-reddit migration era posts, you'll find a lot more spaces then there are now.
