all it really means is that these games are mostly propped up by exclusivity, and hard marketing during that time period to drive sales on consoles. it doesn't mean there's a hidden formula on when to give up exclusivity that is secretly driving people to buy the games en mass.
the past year alone shows that devs/publishers can't just throw endless amounts of money at anything to make it sell even remotely well.
