You guys are missing a key element. They COULDN’T make a trans character even if they wanted too. It’s JAPAN and they can trans-bait characters and have cross dressers, but it’s neigh impossible to actually get away with “This person feels like a man so they are a man” or “This person feels like a woman so they are a woman.” Even when we KNOW a character is trans they are not allowed to say they are. Deniability hast to be there.
