RWBY was profitable, RT as a whole was not.
As to why RT wasn't profitable, that can be debated.
My belief is that they tried to expand heir audience by appealing to women more via Tumblr type stuff but ended up alienating their established core male one.
tldr; They did the equivalent of marketing Barbie to boys.
