Unfortunately(?) I am not familiar with most hard drugs, so I'm not sure if they'd be a good fit for my characters or what their effects would even look like. I figure addiction as a coping mechanism works just fine in storytelling regardless of which addiction it is, and alcohol is a pretty universal one while cigarettes are aesthetic as fuck.

Doomed as in "we have different expectations and things explode because we don't handle it responsibly", as it often goes. Perhaps not the usual reasons that people think of for these characters (everyone always get so hung up on their musical differences!), but one that is perhaps more realistic and resonant.
Granted that was years ago in the "canon" of it, but it's still a thing I need to explore.
