Kinda, there have been systems of progression and "ranking" that did a great job of encouraging players to stay on their mains and keep playing the game at their actual rank/MMR. While the balancing was genuinely terrible and completely ignored by the developers, Halo Reach's progression system generated a lot of individual pride for players.
