There were no "small tribes". Every native polity the Aztecs were conquered also belonged to the same wider culture of city-dwelling, pyramid-building, and, most importantly for this conversation, human-sacrificing people as the Aztecs. And they weren't "hunted like animals", the Aztecs extracted regular tribute from them in the form of luxury goods. Captives for human sacrifice were captured in battle during conquests. It wasn't really that much of a different arrangement from a regular tributary empire.

The average conquistador wore the same kind of cotton armor the average aztec soldier did (they didn't go around naked unlike in the shitty aztec game in the OP or apocalypto) lol, they weren't prancing around in full plate in the tropical heat
Also, Macuahuilt were more analogous to swords, which is why the conquistadors themselves referred to them as broadswords
