I was an observer in a Danish classroom of 16-17 years olds back in 2008.
They were able to read words, but when the teacher asked them to translate sentences live in real time, none of them could do it, some tried but stumbled like a real ESL.
It dawned upon us that the curriculum was way too difficult.
They were only at the level of children's books.
