I've lived in the UK all my life (30+) and I've never heard a single person say "that smarts". Is this a yankee thing?

Chiming in here and going off memory but didn't like 1-2 years ago Daddy Xi say that Christmas/Halloween are like the opiate of the masses/basically saying they were spiritual poison or something so ever since they've had to publicly steer away from these western holidays?
